European patent applications filed with the EPO

European companies filed the greatest number of applications in nine of the ten most active fields, the only exception being Computer technology, where Asian and US applicants were dominant. Medical technology was again the field with the highest volume of applications, even growing slightly. Computer technology, Transport and Electrical machinery grew the fastest, while applications in Pharmaceuticals dropped significantly after a slight increase in 2012. For the second year in a row, applications decreased in Organic fine chemistry and Biotechnology.
