14.00-15.30	Micro-seminar 1 Oriental perspectives: Getting to grips with patents in East Asia Irene Schellner & Christine Kämmer, EPO In addition to Japan, which has been a force to be reckoned with for many years, recent patent statistics have illustrated a tremendous growth in patent filings in other East Asian countries, most notably in China and Korea. These are important developments affecting the whole of the patent community. This micro-seminar gives you an overview of the patent systems in Japan, China and Korea, introduces the most important steps in the patent granting procedures and explores the special features of patent documentation. Some of the recent revisions of patent laws and their impact on patent documentation will also be discussed. Furthermore, you will get practical tips on how to read and interpret the information found on the first pages of Japanese, Chinese and Korean documents.

14.00-15.30	Micro-seminar 3 Learning opportunities at the EPO Roland Feinäugle, EPO Harald Pichlhöfer, EPO The aim of this seminar is to provide the attendees an overview on the learning opportunities at the EPO and where to find the respective offers. Secondly, the seminar will give an insight into the prerequisites and operational scenario of the EPO's virtual classroom service. This is done with the intention to enable PATLIB staff to locate suitable training opportunities for them and their end-users. Objectives: At the end of the training the participants should know the different kinds of training offered by the EPO know where to find the various offers on the EPO's website understand the requirements, set-up and operational scenario of the EPO's virtual classroom service be able to judge which offers are relevant for themselves and for their customers Outline: The seminar will start with an overview on the different learning opportunities at the EPO. Access to the different types of training such as the searchable events calendar and the e-learning repository will be demonstrated. In the second part, a live demonstration of the virtual classroom service will be given. Both the trainer and learner workstations will be set-up and operated in two separate rooms, emulating a real virtual classroom training event. During the demonstration participants can ask questions and actively try out the service as a trainer or a trainee by switching between the two rooms.

16.00-17.30	Micro-seminar 4 Fit for Asia: Making the most of free sources of patent information from East Asia Irene Schellner & Christine Kämmer, EPO Patent information from East Asia has traditionally been difficult to access and interpret. Yet, in an increasingly global economy, nobody can afford to neglect patent documentation from Japan, China or Korea in their searches. This micro-seminar provides you with an overview of the most essential governmental sources of patent information in Japan, China and Korea. You will learn about data coverage, time delay and gaps in coverage, as well as technical requirements. The emphasis of the seminar will be on practical search tips, showing you how to make the most of free East Asian patent information sources even without language knowledge. This seminar includes group work on special East Asian patent search challenges.
16.00-17.30	Micro-seminar 5 Preparing PATLIBs for the future: developing common standards of service for PATLIBs Maria Lampert, British Library, UK PATLIB UK is an alliance of UK information service providers with a mutual interest in and a firm commitment to, the provision of patent information services and the promotion of intellectual property to businesses and their local communities. There had never been a formal agreement, nor any formal requirements, drawn up for the existing PATLIB UK centres and it was felt that in order to market the PATLIBs, and to promote the services we provide effectively, we should look at the key areas which we felt defined PATLIB status and in doing so establish minimum standards for the PATLIB UK Alliance. Creating the minimum standards proved to be an interesting exercise, we looked at the key areas of staff and training, resources and services and established what should be provided by every PATLIB centre in each of these areas, On the 5th December 2007 the member libraries of PATLIB UK met for our AGM and agreed to adopt a set of standards and a constitution which will regulate the way in which the service providers interact with their customers. The standards set out the aims, benefits and conditions of membership of PATLIB UK, with emphasis on the obligations of each and every member library to each other and to the public. The standards also set out how the performance of each of the member libraries will be measured against these obligations. However it is not all pressure on the PATLIB members as the standards also detail what each member of PATLIB UK is entitled to receive for free in terms of IP materials and the role the UKIPO is going to play. This seminar will look at the standards and constitution of PATLIB UK in some depth and will demonstrate how they can be used as tools for improving services, building a good reputation, identifying training needs and as a basis for marketing PATLIBs within the changing marketplace for IP services.
16.00-17.30	Micro-seminar 6 Searching with Mimosa Alfred Wenzel, EPO In this seminar, participants will learn about MIMOSA's advanced search features, which allow professional searching in ESPACE databases and document collections. We will briefly present the main ESPACE series, explain how to use it and demonstrate a few sample tasks. The seminar will explain how this service complements - and is complemented by - other electronic publications and patent information services provided by the EPO.
