Global IP - GE Healthcare, London

All four scenarios are relevant to the continued use of IP to gain competitive edge. Our vision is based on four interlocking elements: innovation, awareness, maintenance and value.

Innovation - In today’s knowledge society, an understanding of IP literature is essential for all innovators, scientific literature alone is insufficient. Patent applications are frequently the first publication about a new technology. We stimulate innovation by empowering the individual to explore internal & external knowledge, creating and maintaining an innovation driven culture, rewarding inventors and setting innovation challenges.

Awareness - is the foundation for all business decisions. It is essential that all functions (not just IP) have this awareness. Competitive landscaping must be used systematically, upstream of R&D investment. Alerts & surveillance are used to proactively monitor changes in the patent landscape. These results and business priorities are combined to determine IP strategy. The IP and business strategies are then aligned.

Maintenance - IP is assembled into a strong complimentary portfolio, tuned to the strategic needs of the business. This enables optimization of costs and the level of protection.

Value - a combination of IP tools are used, as appropriate to a given business situation. These range from establishing exclusivity via key patents to in-licensing of complementary technologies and out-licensing of non-core technologies. This ensures maximum flexibility and leverage.
