In April 2007 the European Patent Forum took place for the first time together with the European Inventor of the Year awards and the European Commission's PATINNOVA07 conference.
The European Patent Forum was one of the first attempts to examine intellectual property holistically, taking into account taking into account political, social, ethical, technological, environmental and historical factors. It was also a chance for the EPO to present the results of its three-year "Scenarios for the future" project, which looks at how IP might develop over the next twenty years.
Jointly organised by the EPO and the European Commission, the European Inventor of the Year awards were first presented in Brussels in 2006. In its second year, the gala event moved to Munich, where inventors were honoured in the categories "industry", "SMEs/research", "non-European countries" and "lifetime achievement".
