The EPO and its place in the patent system
After some considerations about Intellectual Property Rights in general, the various patent systems all around the world and their history, the role of the EPO as a regional office, its position compared to national patent offices and to other regional offices will be explained and discussed. The possible future of the European patent system will be also presented.
Top of PagePatent documents are written by patent attorneys on behalf of their clients.
In order that they simultaneously fulfil the requirements of scientific and technical precision, and of legal certainty, patent documents are written according to international standards in a special format and language which we may call “Patentese”. All too frequently, intellectual property attorneys use patent jargon and, as a result, others, many times the inventor himself, are unable to understand the documents.
This training session is twofold. We will start off with an overview and explanation of the different bibliographical elements comprising a European patent specification and a European patent application.
Halfway through the session we will explain a selection of frequently
used patent terms and explain how to read and interpret the contents of
patent documents. As time limitations preclude full delineation of all
meanings, the discussed terms and definitions should be regarded as providing
accurate, but not legal, meanings of the terms.
Walkthrough the EPO's patent information products
This lesson gives an overview of the patent information products of the EPO under the aspect of the resources used and the different ways of presentation on the platforms created for users, from quick online information lookup to profile processing and to bulk data download
Top of PageOther suppliers of patent information
This presentation will review the patent information business sector
and identify the roles and niche markets of the various suppliers in
the public
and private sector. Some examples of patent information business models
will be given. The presentation will conclude with examples of some
commercially
available products and the results obtained from them.

From filing to granting – an overview on patent granting systems and procedures, with an outlook to the EPC 2000
An introduction to the different patent granting systems
The database of ideas: esp@cenet®
esp@cenet is a free internet service that allows the retrieval of patent documents published by national and regional patent offices.
esp@cenet has been positioned as a principal source of technical
information which is contained in the patent documents themselves.
Specifically for EP and EURO-PCT publications, we will have a closer
look at the links esp@cenet offers to the European Register and the
Inpadoc Legal Status and Patent family information. Also the List of
citing documents is important to understand the importance of a document
within its technical field. We will look at how to best formulate search
queries and how to set up a good search strategy to retrieve most relevant
documents. We will introduce you to the Boolean operators and the truncation
possibilities, how to double your keyword power by using a classification
search (IPC and ECLA) and how to interpret result lists. Besides presenting
the full document download function, we will also show you the other
features of the esp@cenet service, for example, esp@cenet forum,
help files and the esp@cenet assistant. Time will also be reserved
for question and answers.
Hands-on Searching in esp@cenet®
Building on a basic introduction to the service, students will learn how to access esp@cenet and then perform simple searches through examples to better understand the possibilities and limitations of the service.
esp@cenet will be introduced by means of a short presentation. This will be followed by some worked through examples to show how to access the service and perform searches. A series of practical exercises each demonstrating particular functions of the service will then be set for the students to practice (hands on) using esp@cenet for themselves.
Top of PageIntellectual property on the internet
There are a number of intellectual property resources available on the internet. This course is an introduction to the various types of intellectual property, how to find out the status, ownership and substance of different IP rights, internet resources supporting the different aspects of IP management: registration, protection , exploitation and so on, will be explored. Course participants will have the opportunity of exploring IP space on the internet for themselves.
Top of PageOverview on patent information products for business use
This course will provide an overview on how to use patent information to support decision making in the business environment. The role of patent information with regard to identifying the best patent strategy and managing patent portfolios will be explained. An illustration of IPscore, a tool for analysing own patent portfolios, will clarify how to identify opportunities and risks and align the patent strategy with the overall business strategy.
Top of PageLooking East - the EPO's East Asian patent information services
Recent patent statistics illustrate a tremendous growth in patent filings in East Asian countries, most notably China and Korea, in addition to Japan, which has been a force to be reckoned with for many years. These are important developments affecting patent searchers' daily work.
This presentation will give you an insight into patenting and patent
trends in Japan, China and Korea, and introduce the most important
aspects of their patent systems. You will also learn what the EPO
can do to help you get "fit for Asia".
Electronic Publications from the EPO
The EPO produces a range of electronic publication products using the ESPACE (MIMOSA) platform and the European Publication Server. This presentation will provide an introduction for beginners into the information contained in these DVD-ROM and internet based products. Participants will also be introduced to some of the basic functionality offered for retrieving the data.
Top of PageRegister Plus combines the searchable legal status data available via the European Patent Register with online file inspection of all the public documents in the internal dossier corresponding to each European Patent application and its subsequent processing. It also allows you to access data in esp@cenet and Open Patent Services (OPS) for patent family information and INPADOC legal status.
WebRegMT is a free service allowing you to monitor all the procedural
steps in up to 250 European Patent applications. Should there be any
published change in their legal status, you can choose to be informed
by e-mail which includes a link to the particular application record
concerned. This tool can be used not only for monitoring your own patents,
but also those of your competitors.
In this practical session, the participants will have the opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills acquired during the preceding days. Given exercises referring to the various EPO products and patent information sources introduced in the seminar shall, therefore, be solved in small groups.
