Come to Vienna and discover what's new about East Asian patent information at this year's "East meets West" forum. During the two days, the main focus will be on machine translation, cross-lingual patent retrieval and advanced search functions. In addition, the forum will put the spotlight on two countries that are of increasing importance to patent searchers: India and Vietnam.
Registration is now closed as the forum is fully booked.A limited number of patent information specialists and other experts experienced in handling Chinese data will meet in a working group prior to the forum. The aim is to collate information on new and existing sources of Chinese patent data. The chairman of the working group will present the findings to the plenary of "East meets West" on Friday, 18 April 2008. Read more about the pre-conference working group.
The "East meets West" forum will take place at a new venue, the Radisson SAS Palais Hotel. This unique Viennese hotel on Parkring right in the centre of Vienna is located in two fully restored and combined renaissance palaces. For more detailed information please go to the hotel website.
If you feel "lost in translation" when dealing with Asian patents, the first presentations at this year's forum will give you an update on new technical developments aimed at tackling the language barrier. Asian experts will introduce machine translation services and cross-lingual patent retrieval, and show some advanced search functions in Chinese and Korean databases.
An expert from the Vietnamese Patent Office will provide you with an introduction to patent information from Vietnam and another presentation will illustrate the status quo of intellectual property in India.
At the end of the first day, we will provide you with an update on the patent law revision currently taking place in China. Our guest speaker, Thomas Moga, an experienced US patent attorney, will use his talk to discuss the impact the planned changes of the Chinese patent law may have on foreign applicants.
This year's evening event will take place at the "Neue Burg".
"Neue Burg" was the last ambitious building project of the Austrian imperial family at the end of the 19th century located in the heart of Vienna. It now houses the ethnological collections of Vienna, demonstrating that the dialogue between East and West has quite a long history. Exhibits include several private collections brought together by Viennese entrepreneurs, adventurers and scientists having toured Japan, China, Korea and other East Asian countries.
We will first have a welcome cocktail at the "Jagdplateau" (hunting plateau) of the "Neue Burg", where the Austrian emperor used to welcome his guests. Then a curator will give us an introduction on some East Asian objects on display. Afterwards, we will continue our dialogue between East and West over a traditional Viennese buffet.
Buses depart at 18.45 hrs from outside the Radisson SAS Palais Hotel and will be available again to take you back to your hotel at 22.00 hrs.

On the morning of the second day, you will have a chance to meet commercial data providers from East Asia and see presentations of their patent information products.
A new feature this year will be a poster session during which providers of East Asian patent information will introduce the search possibilities and features of their services. This poster session will be combined with our popular "Coffee with the experts", which allows you to meet the experts in an informal atmosphere during a long coffee break.
After the poster session, participants will meet the experts in smaller discussion rounds. Hot topics will include patent enforcement in China, searching with classifications, machine translation and cross-lingual retrieval and East Asian legal status information. We feel that these discussion rounds are a unique opportunity for Western users of East Asian patent information to pass on their feedback and mention their needs and wishes to the experts from the Japanese, Chinese and Korean patent offices.
For first-time participants and those who feel in need of an update, we offer a series of courses in the run-up to the forum:
In the afternoon of 16 April 2008, we will start off with practical hands-on training sessions. An expert from the Korean Institute of Patent Information (KIPI) will show you how to make the most of the various features of the KIPRIS database. You will then be able to explore the database yourself in practical exercises.
Alternatively, you can take part in a practical introduction to Japanese FI and F-terms. During this session, an EPO expert will give some tips and tricks for using this classification system and you will be able to try out the various search possibilities for yourself.
As in the previous years, we will offer basic introductory sessions in the morning of 17 April 2008. You can take this opportunity to bring yourself up to speed with various aspects of patent information from East Asia and prepare yourself for the presentations and discussion rounds. EPO experts will provide an overview on patent systems, patent documentation and legal status information from Japan, China and Korea. Meeting a popular demand by our participants, we have decided also to include an introduction to patents from Taiwan.
