Oriental perspectives: getting to grips with patents in Asia

China, Japan and Korea are all among the top five patenting nations in the world. Patent documents from these countries account for more than 50 percent of the world's new patent publications every year and form an essential part of the patent literature that patent searchers have to consider in their daily work. In more recent years, Taiwan and India, as well as other smaller countries in Asia, have gained in importance for the patent information community.

This training session provides an overview and comparison of the most important aspects of the patent systems in Asian countries and introduces the special features of Asian patent documentation, familiarising you with document types, kind codes, the numbering system, etc.

In addition to the "big three", the course covers emerging patent countries like Taiwan, ASEAN countries and India.

Finding Korean patent information on KIPRIS

The "Korea Industrial Property Rights Information Service" (KIPRIS) provides free access to Korean patent information. Based on the Korean Patent Office's official patent data, most data on KIPRIS are in Korean. However, there are a number of possibilities for the non-Korean users to make the most of the wealth of information available on KIPRIS.

While previously Korean Patent Abstracts (KPA) was the only database on KIPRIS allowing English language searches, English search interfaces for the Korean patent and utility model gazettes and for trade marks and designs have recently been added to the system. The latest addition is the K2E-PAT service, which offers machine-translated full texts of Korean patents and utility models.

This hands-on training session, run by experts from the EPO and the Korea Institute of Patent Information (KIPI), introduces you to the search functions on KIPRIS and demonstrates the search possibilities for the full range of Korean industrial property rights.

You will get practical tips on searching in KPA English abstracts and on finding legal status information in English. You will learn how to retrieve original Korean patent and utility model documents and machine-translated English versions.

This training session demonstrates how you can search Korean patent information more effectively and how you can fill gaps in your Korean searches on esp@cenet and other free sources on the internet.

Register Plus and WebRegMT

This workshop is an introduction to the EPO's Register Plus and it's alert service. You will learn how to retrieve data and view files and moreover, how to set alerts for your specific requirements. The workshop will also concentrate on how to interpret the information delivered via these products.

Register Plus is the EPO's legal and procedural status database. Users can retrieve information on applications during the European phase, moreover via the online file inspection, users can obtain the procedural correspondence between the EPO and it's clients. Via the standard and advanced search functions, both novice and more expert users can optimally extract data and information from the register.

WebRegMT is the EPO's register alert service. It notifies you when specific changes in selected files occur. Users can select which changes trigger a notification and can monitor up to 1 000 cases per account.
