The European Patent Office in Munich is seeking a technically qualified member of the Boards of Appeal (Electricity)

Deadline for applications: 31.5.2008

Under the European Patent Convention, the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office have final-instance jurisdiction over the grant of European patents.

Main duties

A board member's main duties are as follows:

  1. Participation in all written and oral procedural stages before the Boards of Appeal, up to and including the decision terminating the proceedings.
    As rapporteur: making proposals about taking evidence and communications to parties.
    Preparing draft decisions, including all related tasks.

  2. Helping to train new board members and assistants.

  3. Tasks relating to the organisation and working methods of DG 3.

Candidates must have a university degree or - in exceptional cases - equivalent knowledge and expertise acquired over many years of professional experience.

Candidates must have a special aptitude for judicial work and be able to work on a wide range of technical subject-matter, especially in the fields of electric elements, electronic circuitry and electric power engineering. Very high standards of performance are expected. Candidates should also have worked in the field of patent law, and have practical experience as patent examiners or patent agents. They should preferably be between 45 and 55 years of age.

Candidates must be fluent in at least one of the EPO official languages** and have a good knowledge of the other two.
