"I like working as a chemist and this is one of the very few possibilities that a chemist has to actually work as a chemist, to read chemistry, to understand chemistry and to read new developments in chemistry. This is very, very rare."
My name is Nuki West. I'm 36 years old. I'm a Danish examiner and I'm working in Polymer Chemistry.
I started working for the EPO seven years ago. I started right after having accomplished my PhD. I'm working in Polymer Chemistry. "Polymers" is a chemical word; the usual term would be "plastics".
If an applicant has, or he believes that he has, something new in this area, then such an application will most probably land on my desk. Then I have to examine it. That is to say, first of course I have to read the application, then I have to judge whether it is novel and inventive. To do so I need to search in our databases to see if there are similar applications and to compare it with the state of the art.
I like working as a chemist and this is one of the very few possibilities that a chemist has to actually work as a chemist, to read chemistry, to understand chemistry and to read new developments in chemistry. This is very, very rare.
I like the whole package. Of course, first of all it provides a very good salary, which is not to be neglected, and it also provides very good working conditions and very stable working conditions. And also - something that's very important for me personally - it provides very nice working hours, which allow me to find sufficient time to be together with my four children
Now please, if you would excuse me, I have to go back to work. Thank you very much.
