Under the European Patent Convention, the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office have final-instance jurisdiction with respect to European patents.
A board of appeal acts in a collegial manner. In that context a board member's main duties are as follows:
Candidates must have a diploma of completed studies at university level or - in exceptional cases - equivalent knowledge acquired over many years of qualified work, as well as many years of professional experience.
Candidates must have a special aptitude for judicial work and be able to work on a wide range of subject-matter in the field of organic chemistry including pharmacy. Very high standards of performance are expected.
Candidates should have worked in the field of patent law, and have proven practical experience in particular in opposition proceedings (patent examiners, professional representatives) and/or appeal proceedings (professional representatives). They should preferably be between 45 and 55 years of age.
Candidates must have an excellent knowledge of one official language of the EPO (English, French and German) and the ability to understand the other two.
Internal candidates should supplement their application with their last two full period staff reports as PDF scans, the PAX sheets for the same period, as well as agree to their superior being contacted in case they are invited for an interview.
