EU-Russia project

Background

This project, entitled "Approximation of EU and Russian Federation Intellectual Property Right aspects", was launched in September 2009 and ended in October 2010. It was designed to be of direct and immediate benefit to the Federal Service for Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks (Rospatent) and to staff of the State Federal Institute for Industrial Property (FIPS) and the State Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (RGIIS).

Objectives

The main objectives of the project were to study current Russian patent legislation, make recommendations on how to achieve convergence with European legislation, and develop guidelines for use by patent examiners at Rospatent. The project also reviewed streamlining aspects related to Russia’s patent application, registration and processing procedures to approximate them to the European approach. Other objectives included promoting the teaching of IP economics in Russia and addressing the Russian system of supplementary protection for pharmaceuticals in the light of current European administrative and judicial practice.

This project was implemented under the Common Spaces Facility, which is intended to facilitate dialogue within the framework of the four EU-Russian Common Spaces.
