The ip4inno project, co-funded by the European Commission (as part of the Sixth Framework Programme - Research and Innovation) and eighteen partners from EU member and candidate states, was launched in January 2007. The two-year project has a budget of €4m. The European Patent Office is acting as co-ordinator of the project and taking the lead in implementing two “work packages”: WP3 for developing a Common European Support Mechanism (CESM) and disseminating information via the CESM to end users and WP4 for gathering training material and conducting training courses.
The main aim of the ip4inno project is to further understanding of intellectual property among SMEs and increase their use of it, with a view to promoting innovation and competitiveness in Europe in line with the goals of the Lisbon Agenda.
ip4inno will assess the IP knowledge and training needs of innovative SMEs and research institutes, find out about the initiatives and best practices already in place in Europe, create a core set of teaching materials and "train trainers" of IP located in various European production areas.
These trainers will then spread the knowledge they have acquired among the business advisory communities in their own countries in order to increase the general level of strategic and managerial proficiency in IP in the industrial sector and, in particular, among new SMEs.
A pilot project will further disseminate this knowledge to end users, namely the SMEs and research institutes, in three selected European regions.
