The Research Fund of the European Patent Organisation has been operational, created in 1988, and is endowed with a total of EUR 500 000 for the period 2003-2007.
The Fund is governed by regulations and by guidelines issued pursuant to the regulations, which are reproduced hereafter.
The Research Fund aims to promote studies and research carried out at university level in the field of the protection of inventions, and especially in connection with the European patent system.
Support can be provided for scientific studies dealing with the examination of particular aspects of this field related to various disciplines - legal, economic, political, sociological, historical etc. - and preferably concerning questions which have not yet been examined thoroughly and are not the subject of current studies carried out by others (see previous projects ).
However, support from the Fund cannot be provided in respect of studies of a purely technical nature, for example a project aimed at developing, improving or applying an industrial product or process.
The Fund may also provide support for studies which have already commenced.
Support may be granted to:
• an individual who is a national of a Member State of the European Patent Organisation or who is working on a research project at a research institution having its seat in one of those States;
• a research institution or equivalent establishment having its seat in one of those States.
Support from the Fund will normally not exceed EUR 50 000 per individual project.
