European patent applications filed in 2008 per technical field and origin
The table shows the distribution of European patent applications filed in 2008 based on the country of residence (origin) of the applicant and the technical field in which the application is classified.
Almost half of the 146 600 applications filed in 2008 were submitted by companies located in the contracting states to the EPC, while US companies accounted for 26% of the overall figure.

The chart shows the distribution of the applications filed per region between the 14 technical fields used by the EPO for classification purposes. The four regions are the 34 EPC contracting states (as at end 2008), Japan, the US and the rest of the world ("other countries"). It indicates the different levels of specialisation of the regions in the different technical domains.
