Enhanced access to patent information from the European Patent Office

Désolé. Actuellement, cette page n'existe pas en français.

Vienna, 15 November 2004 - Patent information from the European Patent Office (EPO) encompasses over 45 million documents. To meet the needs of both small and large-sized organisations, the EPO has developed a wide range of tools and services that optimise the retrieval and exploitation of patent information.

“The EPO, as guardian of the world’s largest patent databases, has a duty to strive for the highest possible quality in its databases, and always to provide state-of-the-art technology to enable retrieval and exploitation of data,” said Wolfgang Pilch, Principal Director Patent Information in Vienna, Austria.

Visitors to Online Information 2004 will benefit from a sneak preview of the EPO European Publication Server, which will be released in January 2005. The European Publication Server will enable the publication of European patent applications (EP-A documents) and European patent specifications (EP-B documents). The documents will be offered free of charge on a dedicated publication server accessible via the internet.

Released in October 2004, MIMOSA v.5 is the first version compatible with the new international XML standard for patent data. Some of the new features include improved synergies between various online databases and optical media as well as a new remote data access function.

The latest upgrade of esp@cenet® will be presented at Online Information 2004. Features of the upgrade include: new maximised view and improved document navigation, access to the bibliographic information of non-patent literature, esp@cenet® assistant (provides users with help and support and includes items such as a guided tour and a crash course in the esp@cenet® databases).

About the European Patent Office

The European Patent Office (EPO) grants European patents for the contracting states to the European Patent Convention (EPC), which was signed in Munich on 5 October 1973 and entered into force on 7 October 1977. It is the executive arm of the European Patent Organisation, an intergovernmental body set up under the EPC, whose members are the EPC contracting states. The activities of the EPO are supervised by the Organisation’s Administrative Council, composed of delegates from the contracting states. The EPO grants European patents using a unitary and centralised procedure. A single patent application in any of the three official languages - English, French, German - can provide patent protection in 29 states (soon to become 30).
