Dutchman Peter Vermeij new Vice-President of the European Patent Office (in English and Dutch)

Munich, 13 March 2007 - - The Administrative Council of the European Patent Organisation has decided to appoint Peter A. Vermeij as new Vice-President of the Directorate-General 2, Operational Support, of the European Patent Office (EPO). Peter Vermeij will succeed Pantelis C. Kyriakides (GB/Cyprus) who retires on 30 June.

Peter Vermeij, born in 1955 and of Dutch nationality, has extensive management experience in public administration, including intellectual property. In his current position as Deputy Secretary-General to the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, his main responsibility is administrative organisation, with a strong focus on efficiency, effectiveness and customer relations. He is also responsible for agencies of the ministry, including the Netherlands Patent Office.

In his new position as Vice-President, Peter Vermeij will be in charge of quality management, information management (IM) and patent administration at the European Patent Office.

The core business of the European Patent Office is the examination of European patent applications with a centralised procedure defined by the European Patent Convention. The Office has its headquarters in Munich and branches in The Hague, Berlin and Vienna.

The Administrative Council supervises the Office's activities, exercises legislative powers (in the framework of the European Patent Convention) and is also responsible for the appointment of senior employees, such as the President and the five Vice-Presidents of the EPO. It is composed of delegates from all 32 member states of the European Patent Organisation.

Peter Vermeij nieuwe Vice-president Europees Octrooibureau

München, 13 maart 2007 - - De Raad van Bestuur van de Europese Octrooiorganisatie heeft besloten de heer Peter A. Vermeij te benoemen tot nieuwe Vice-president van Directoraat-generaal 2, "Operational Support", van het Europees Octrooibureau (EOB). Peter Vermeij volgt Pantelis Kyriakides (GB/Cyprus) op, die op 30 juni aftreedt.

Peter Vermeij is in 1955 in Nederland geboren. Hij heeft uitgebreide managementervaring op het gebied van overheidsbeleid, waaronder ook intellectuele eigendom. In zijn huidige functie als Plaatsvervangend Secretaris-Generaal van het Ministerie van Economische Zaken is zijn belangrijkste taak administratieve organisatie, met sterke gerichtheid op efficiency, effectiviteit en klantrelaties. Hij is tevens verantwoordelijk voor agentschappen van het Ministerie, waaronder Octrooicentrum Nederland.

In zijn nieuwe functie als Vice-president gaat Peter Vermeij leiding geven aan kwaliteitsbeheer, information management (IM) en de administratie van octrooien bij het Europees Octrooibureau.

De kernactiviteit van het Europees Octrooibureau is het onderzoek van Europese octrooiaanvragen, met een gecentraliseerde procedure zoals vastgelegd in het Europees Octrooiverdrag. Het Bureau heeft zijn hoofdkantoor in München en onderdelen in Den Haag, Berlijn en Wenen.

De Raad van Bestuur houdt toezicht op de activiteiten van het Bureau, oefent wetgevende macht uit (in het kader van het Europees Octrooi Verdrag) en is tevens verantwoordelijk voor de benoeming van topfunctionarissen, zoals de President en de vijf Vice-presidenten van het EOB. De Raad bestaat uit afgevaardigden van alle 32 lidstaten van de Europese Octrooiorganisatie.
