Proceedings of the seminar on "The European patent system. Focus 2003: Research and development". The management of intellectual property is of paramount importance, not only for rightsholders but also for society that is in turn busy solving the overall question of how to maximise the benefits from the intellectual property system by creating the most appropriate framework. By pointing out the possibilities and advantages offered by the patent system to those who work in R&D, contributions inform about existing programmes to foster innovation at universities and research institutions.
