The spirit of invention - the curiosity and drive to discover things that are new and groundbreaking - has for generations propelled human progress. Without a number of key inventions, our society would not be able to enjoy the standard of living we frequently take for granted.

Every year, we celebrate this spirit of invention with the presentation of Europe's highest distinction for inventors worldwide: the European Inventor Award. It pays tribute to the creativity of all inventors who, in applying their technical, scientific and intellectual skills, make a major contribution to progress, growth and employment in Europe.

Now in its sixth year, the award ceremony was held at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest and honoured outstanding inventors in the categories:

  • Industry
  • SME
  • Research
  • Non-European countries
  • Lifetime achievement.

The event is being organised by the EPO in co-operation with the European Commission, the Hungarian EU Council Presidency and the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office.
