Common aspects and
differences in the patent procedures at the five biggest IP offices (until
grant)
The patent systems of the five biggest IP offices show many similarities, but also quite a number of differences. Especially in light of the current efforts to make patent systems fit for the future, it is worth looking into these different features in a comparative manner.
This session will cover procedures up to the grant of a patent including examination and appeal procedures or time limits and gives an overview of special features like the possibilities of early publication or accelerated examination. Recent as well as planed changes to the patent systems will also be discussed.

Understanding Asian patent documents
This session will highlight the basics of patent documentation from Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, Korea and India. You will learn to distinguish different types of documents and get tips on how to interpret the information found on first pages. Country-related specifics such as the Japanese imperial years will be covered.

How to use Espacenet in new and different ways
Espacenet has been given a new look and feel and we will explore this latest Espacenet version 5 together in this workshop. New features implemented in Espacenet now allow the database to be used in ways never possible before. In the past, using Espacenet could be a solitary experience. Today with new export functions, saved queries, bookmarked searches, RSS feeds you can really communicate, and share your results with others.

Common aspects and differences in the patent procedures at the five biggest
IP offices (after grant)
This session will look at the biggest five IP offices patent procedures from grant on onwards. The changes, these patent systems have undergone especially in the last few years, will be discussed. We will cover different trial procedures as e.g. invalidation, limitation or correction trials. Other post grant features as term extensions or annual fee payment will be dealt with as well.

How to get the best out of Patent information services for experts
EPO Patent information services for experts is a Rich Internet Application user interface for accessing European and worldwide patent data aimed at more advanced users. This course is intended to make participants familiar with all features offered in the user interface. For example, participants will learn how to customise the user interface to their needs, and carry out detailed searches in multiple databases (EP documents Bulletin, Global Patent Index, PATSTAT) covering bibliographic data, full-text, citations, and legal status data.

Advanced features of free Asian databases
This session will focus on advanced features of the free databases offered by the JPO, SIPO, KIPO and TIPO. Participants will learn how to use the original language interfaces to supplement their searches and minimise possible gaps in the information provided. Topics to be covered will include:
Each participant will have access to a computer for hands-on exercises and exploring search options. Experience with the English interfaces of Asian sources would be useful, but knowledge of Asian languages is not required.

Patent statistics and
patent mapping for specific topics: Wind energy and your area of interest
In this advanced seminar the set-up of patent statistics is described and how EPO's PATSTAT database (off-line and on-line) can be used for this purpose. The statistical possibilities of PATSTAT will be explored in detail analysing patent applications from the wind energy area, that are part of the climate change mitigation technologies (Y02). It will be explained how to analyse in this clean energy area cross country co-inventorship, important applications (e.g. What is the most cited patent family?) and knowledge transfer to other technologies. Linking legal status data (post grant data from the INPADOC database) allows to analyse change of ownership or duration in force. It will also be demonstrated how statistical analyses may be visualised in combination with commercial business intelligence products. Participants will be formulating their own SQL (Structured Query Language) queries in this hands on training. Participants are asked in advance to submit typical statistical questions and their areas of interest. These will be addressed within the limits of the resources available.
Patent professionals having access to commercial tools may however find the usability and features of the presented tools too limited.
Level:
Advanced, knowledge of SQL (Structured Query Language) is an advantage

REST based web services: open access to EPO's data sources
This workshop will provide an introduction to accessing the databases behind Espacenet, the European Patent Register, the European Publication Server, and the EPO Raw Data Area via REpresentational State Transfer (REST) web services. The EPO has amassed a vast collection of patent information resources which are updated on a regular basis and we aim to apply good practices for open access to these resources. Therefore, whilst much EPO hosted patent information can be searched and data retrieved via the EPO web site using standard HTML search masks, the EPO also provides direct access to much of the corresponding underlying data via the versatile and simple architecture of REST based web services. The "fair use" aspects of these and other EPO online services will also be covered.
