An event for patent information professionals

"It is quite simply the public's right to have access to patent information," said EPO President, Benoît Battistelli. "Which makes it our duty," he continued, " to publish patent data with maximum transparency."

Opening the 21st EPO Patent Information Conference, which took place in Kilkenny on 18-20 October 2011, Mr Battistelli highlighted the importance of worldwide patent data, and drew parallels with open government initiatives in the US and Europe. The EPO has just launched its data.epo.org data platform and expects it grow and develop in the similar way to national initiatives such as data.gov.uk and data.gouv.fr.

Battistelli said, "We have shown that providing raw data at minimum cost gives the market the best conditions for developing high quality tools to access that data. In addition, our own easy-access tools, like Espacenet, have changed the level of public awareness of patent data."
