T1: Understanding patent families at the EPO

This course illustrates the key features of the extended and simple patent families available in the Espacenet and OPS systems. Starting with an overview of the data flows and structure of the EPO databases, it will introduce the concept of patent family and its application at the EPO. To illustrate the usefulness of patent families, we'll discuss some strengths and stumbling blocks.

Level: Advanced
Price: 50 EUR

T2: Patent searches and analyses in your day-to-day work – communicating with customers

Patent searches and analyses are often carried out at the request of customers. To meet their needs and expectations, careful preparation and proper communication are required.

The workshop will provide an overview of key aspects of communication with customers – before, during and after the analysis. Special priority will be given to the final report, which not only completes the search or analysis but is also crucial to its success.

Level: Beginners - Advanced
Price: 50 EUR

T3: Search. Find. Watch. All for free, using EPO tools

The EPO's search and retrieval tools like Espacenet and the Register can be used individually to select particular documents, ascertain completed procedures or determine legal status – all at no cost.

You can configure the tools in a concerted way, to give a complete instantaneous picture. Or you can also set them up in a dynamic way, to ensure that you are always ahead of the curve. This training will show you how.

T4: Introduction to patent systems and documentation from Asia

What does “Showa 64” mean? How does a “super-accelerated examination” work in Korea? What kinds of opposition systems exist in India? Is “Gongkai” dangerous? Asian patent information still poses a lot of challenges to Western users – not only because of residual language barriers, but also because the patent systems and documentation can differ considerably.

This session will provide a comprehensive overview of the special features of the patent systems of China, Japan, Korea and India. We will compare the most important stages during the life of a patent file in these four jurisdictions and explore the mysteries of patent documentation – document types, kind codes and number formats. No prior knowledge of Asian patent information required.

Level: Beginners
Price: 50 EUR

T5: The Common Citation Document and beyond – families, search reports and citations

The Common Citation Document (CCD) is a service that allows you to access the citations allocated by different IP offices to individual patent family members. You can use it to compare patentability searches for the same invention carried out by different offices, and to understand why a given examiner cited a particular piece of prior art. The CCD also helps you to predict the outcome of a search from an office of later filing compared with one from an office of earlier filing. This session will give you an opportunity you to explore its features and possibilities.

The CCD gathers together more than 150 million citations from approximately 31 IP offices worldwide and its coverage is growing all the time. But what if you want citation data from an IP office that’s not one of the 31? Especially if that office is in Asia? No problem: we'll also show you how to access citation data directly from the Asian IP offices which currently do not deliver to the CCD.

T6: Introduction to the PATSTAT product family

The course is an introduction to the PATSTAT product line, which was specially designed by the EPO for experienced users of patent information. It provides a unique basis for advanced statistical analyses of patent data, opening up new opportunities for sophisticated assessment of new technologies, market trends and the competitive environment.

Participants will learn about the history, content and coverage of this product line. They will also be given a general introduction to the PATSTAT databases, and insight into the many benefits they offer.

Level: Intermediate
Price: 50 EUR

T7: Legal status products from the EPO

This course looks at various sources of legal-status information available using the EPO's products and services. You will receive guidance on how to use the various products and will learn to recognise some typical pitfalls. Examples will illustrate the use of different EPO patent information sources, including the European Patent Register, Espacenet, Open Patent Services, Global Patent Index and the European Patent Bulletin. You will then be asked to complete set tasks yourself with the help of the expert. By the end, you will be able to select and access the resource most appropriate for the particular situation.

T8: Exploring and experiencing new Asian databases – J-Plat Pat, InPASS and beyond …

In 2015 alone, several Asian patent offices launched new search tools or improved versions of existing databases. The new “InPASS” search facility now makes it possible to perform full-text searches for Indian documents. The Japanese “J-Plat Pat” database aims to convey the national “Cool Japan” image – and, even more to the point, provides a number of improved search functionalities.

In this seminar, you will explore the most important features of Asia’s new search tools. Apart from InPASS and J-Plat Pat, we will also briefly discuss new features of other Asian jurisdictions, such as Korea’s One Portal Dossier database.

After an introduction to the main search functions, you will be able to experiment with the new tools in a number of hands-on exercises.

Level: Intermediate
Price: 50 EUR

T9: Patent analytics and intelligence

Patent analytics and intelligence support decision-making in companies, patent agencies or technology transfer departments. Potential fields of application range from spotting competitors and business partners to identifying emerging technologies or potential markets for products and services.

This workshop will give a general overview of the main process steps of patent analytics and intelligence, including statistical analysis of bibliographical and legal-status patent data. Examples drawn from selected emerging and established technology sectors will show you how patent analytics and intelligence can support patent information users in gathering the information they need for their daily work.
