Introduction to patent mapping

Patent statistics and the visualization of the results by patent mapping have become more and more important in recent years. This introductory speech highlights the use of patent mapping to support decision making in business. It is explained how to produce patent statistics and visualize the results. Potential pitfalls in producing patent statistics are highlighted and the limitations are explained.

Patent mapping (landscaping) in a global company

Patent searching is long established as a key process in creating, managing and commercializing patent assets.  Search results can be analysed further, by a variety of methods, in a process known as mapping or landscaping.  Correctly applied, the results of this process can be used to facilitate strategic decision-making in a variety of business situations.  In this presentation, I will focus on the processes and methodology deployed in General Electric for patent landscaping.  Mapping and analysing results are a key-enabling factor in the creation and maintenance of a high quality IP portfolio.

Mr Keith J Dilley, GE Corporate

Keith Dilley is Director for the Development of IP Tools & Processes, General Electric.  He has previous career experience as a research scientist and in strategic marketing.  In the late 90's (within Amersham plc), he created a business infrastructure to enable the IP portfolio to be managed in-house. Attention was then focussed on monitoring third party IP and an IP analytics unit was established.  These extended capabilities were applied by the IP team to working with other functions to ensure businesses were fully aware of relevant internal and external IP.  In parallel, working with senior management, the IP component was embedded into virtually all strategic decision making.  The net effect was to shift IP focus from late awakening to early awareness.  Amersham became a part of GE in April 2004 and these principles have been developed further, iterated and applied across Healthcare and elsewhere within GE.  In his current role he responsible for establishing common working practices to ensure that GE can create and maintain a quality IP portfolio.  IP Informatics and Analytics are a cornerstone of this approach and competitive landscaping is an essential first step in the generation of high quality strategically important IP.  A comprehensive set of facilitating tools and processes, deployed across GE, are now in place.

Best practice sharing - Current use/ Enablers and barriers

Participants are asked to describe their usage of patent statistics and patent mapping and identify enablers and barriers in the efficient use of patent mapping in their companies. (Marker pens for everybody, large red and green post it cards).

Introduction to MIMOSA for patent statistics and mapping

The EPO offers various subscription databases that allow in depth analysis of patent data. These data sets are accessed by the included MIMOSA retrieval software. MIMOSA is a professional search tool that can also be used for statistical analysis of patent information. This hands on training will allow participants to practice the usage of MIMOSA for the data retrieval and to export the data to a spreadsheet for further analysis and generation of charts and diagrams.

The EPO worldwide patent statistical database (EPO PATSTAT)

The EPO delivers EPO PATSTAT, a database that is targeted at statisticians for in depth analysis of worldwide patent data. EPO PATSTAT is distributed as a comma separated value (CSV) file to be loaded into the user's database. In this training we use the Structured Query Language (SQL) to retrieve data from a loaded PATSTAT database. After an introduction to basic SQL commands the database will be queried and the data extracted to generate statistics and visualizations.

Best practice sharing - steps forward

Participants are asked to describe an approach how the statistical usage of patent information could be improved in their company.
