EPO patent examiner Thierry Schmitter won a bronze medal at Paralympics in London in the Single-Person Keelboat (2.4mR) category.
With the final 11th race of the series abandoned due to weather conditions, the gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded on the basis of the overall standings established after the first 10 races were complete. Helena Lucas of Great Britain won gold, ahead of German Heiko Kroger (silver) and Thierry Schmitter of the Netherlands (bronze).
EPO President Benoît Battistelli sent a note of congratulations to Mr Schmitter saying that he was "deeply impressed" by the success which followed "many months of hard work and full dedication". "Eight years after your first Paralympic success, you have proven once again that you have the striking capacity to adapt to the prevailing conditions and push yourself to the limits with endurance and spirit. The result speaks for itself" - added Mr Battistelli.
Thierry Schmitter was selected Dutch Disabled Sportsman of the Year in 2011. He won a bronze medal in the 2004 Paralympics and came fifth in 2008.
