The Principality of Monaco hosted the EPO's Online Services User Day this week in Monte Carlo. The event was attended by 120 participants from 19 EPO member states, many of them employed in IP departments of innovating companies, as well as patent attorneys.
The User Day was opened by EPO President Benoît Battistelli and Monaco's Finance and Economy Minister Jean Castellini.
Opening the conference, EPO President Battistelli said that providing high-quality online services is an essential part of fulfilling the Office's mission to support innovation, competitiveness and economic growth across Europe. "It doesn't just mean efficiency for us - it means offering gains in quality and efficiency for those using our services - improvements, adjustments, enhancements that make life easier when it comes to filing applications."
The importance of timeliness of services was also highlighted during a plenary session on the EPO's ‘Early Certainty' initiative, which has been extended from search to include examination and opposition.
Participants learned about recent IT developments, such as an EPO project with member states and the other IP5 offices (China, Japan, Korea and the US) to develop a new, simpler and safer option for filing based on XML.
The User Day included a large number of hands-on workshops in various tools such as the new online filing system (CMS), which is now used by nearly 5 000 customers compared to 3 000 only a year ago.
The next Online Services User Day will take place on 5/6 April 2017 at the EPO in Munich.
