Fresh attempt to elect a President for the European Patent Office

Munich, 1 February 2010 -- The European Patent Organisation's Administrative Council is holding an extraordinary meeting devoted to the election of a new President for the European Patent Office. The delegations of the Organisation's 36 member states are assembling in Munich on 2 and 3 February to appoint a successor to Alison Brimelow.

The candidates are Susanne Ǻs Sivborg, Director General of the Swedish Patent Office, Benoît Battistelli, Director General of the French Patent Office, and Roland Grossenbacher, Director of the Swiss Patent Office.

The extraordinary meeting was convened after the delegates were unable to agree on a presidential candidate in voting at Administrative Council meetings in October and December 2009, when none of the applicants, then four in number, managed to achieve the necessary qualified majority of three-quarters of the votes cast by the member states.
