Munich, 1 March 2011 -- Better access to services, a more intuitive navigation architecture and a clearer design - the website of the European Patent Office (EPO) has a new look and enhanced user-friendliness. Today, following presentation of the beta version a few weeks ago, the EPO officially launches its redesigned digital interface with the user community, www.epo.org. The new structure and design are tailored to the needs of the patent profession, the EPO's business partners and regular users of EPO services.
All new features and improvements are based on extensive surveys, tests and feedback from the EPO's users:
"User feedback has played a big part in setting up this new website. Patents are a key instrument for businesses, as they provide scientists and engineers with vital technical information. Therefore, the EPO sees it as its task to make this wealth of knowledge efficiently available to inventors and the public alike. By uniting previously disparate sources of technical information and with an easier, more intuitive navigation structure, the new EPO website will give effective support to the innovation process in Europe", says EPO President Benoît Battistelli.
The new website provides a single entry point to EPO services, including the free patent information service Espacenet, the European Patent Register, Online filing and Online fee payment. Espacenet and the Register have been redesigned graphically, and fine-tuning of the look and feel of the Online Services portal (formerly epoline) is in progress.
Two new search functions have also been implemented, with another on the way. The EPO site search is now powered by the Google engine, and Espacenet is searchable from the header on each page. A new search engine for board of appeal decisions will be available soon.
Journalists will find the information under "News&issues" of particular interest. This heading will not only host the "Press" section, it will also provide access to audiovisual material such as films, photographs and podcasts, present information about topical issues in the field of patents, and give details of major innovation events such as the European Inventor Award 2011. The URL www.epo.org/press will continue to lead users straight to the media spot on the website.
Most importantly, however, "News&Issues" will also host a new blog opened by the President of the EPO. On a weekly basis, Benoît Battistelli will reflect on significant developments in the European patent system, IP issues of global relevance, important new projects and procedural changes, or public events in the field of patents. Through this new channel, the EPO aims to open up its communication with users and stakeholders of the patent system, and to create an interactive space for the exchange of news and views on patent-related topics.
