>>>>>>> determining the winners The selection process for the European Inventor Award relies on the hard work of EPO patent specialists and an international jury comprised of experts in diverse areas such as business, science, academia and industry. Jurors evaluate innovations not only on their technological originality but also on their economic and social impact. 1 call for submissions Proposals are invited from the public, national patent offices and EPO staff. Submissions are reviewed in terms of their eligibility according to the compe- tition’s criteria. 2 evaluation of proposals by experts A panel of EPO patent experts rigorously checks the proposals to ensure that they meet the procedural and legal require- ments and that the relevant patents are still valid. 3 shortlist of the candidates Based on the evaluation and recommen- dations of the EPO patent experts, a short- list consisting of about 40 pre-selected candidates across the five categories is prepared for the Jury Board. For each of the pre-selected candidates, reports on the merits of the inventions are supplied to assist the Jury. 4 jury’s decision The independent international Jury Board selects three nominees in each category, before finally selecting the winners. The decision on the nominees and winners is taken during a face-to-face meeting by majority voting. The nominees are con- tacted confidentially soon afterwards. 5 announcement of the nominees The names of the nominees are officially announced to the public by the EPO. 6 announcement of the winners The winners in the five categories and the Popular Prize are announced at the award ceremony. >>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> european inventor award 2014
