Nicht zuletzt durch seine Tätig keit als Schweißer auf einer Werft entdeckte er seine Faszination für gewichtige Materialien auch in der Kunst und wechselte zur Bild hauerei. Die 12 Meter hohe und 24 Meter lange Stahlskulptur wirkt als markanter Blickfang am Besu cher-Eingang zum EPA Den Haag. Von Weitem wie ein Obelisk wahr nehmbar, erinnert die Monumen talplastik aus der Nähe dagegen an Vermessungsinstrumente wie einen kolossalen Zirkel, als ginge es darum, die Welt zu vermessen. Diese Verbindung von Urbanität und künstlerischer Geste,von Raum erforschung und Naturvermessung spiegelt Voltens großes Interesse an der Möglichkeit von Kunst im öf fentlichen Raum wider.Von André Volten besitzt das EPA noch eine an dere raumgreifende Installation in den Außenanlagen des Münchner Amtssitzes, die nur wenige Jahre älter ist: die Kugeln und Kugelkalot ten, die im Rahmen des ersten Kunst-am-Bau-Wettbewerbs als nie derländischer Beitrag zur Grün dung des Europäischen Patentam tes in Auftrag gegeben wurden. Avant de s’adonner à la sculpture, André Volten (* 1925 Andijk, NL, † 2002 Amsterdam, NL) avait été peintre. Alors qu’il travaillait comme soudeur sur un chantier na val, il s’était découvert une fasci nation pour les matériaux massifs qui l’amena à se convertir à la sculpture. Son œuvre en acier, de 12 m de haut et de 24 m de long, a de quoi accrocher le regard du visi teur qui se rend à l’OEB à La Haye. Vue de près, cette sculpture monu mentale, qu’on prend de loin pour un obélisque, fait davantage penser à un instrument de mesure tel qu’un compas géant destiné à me surer la terre. Ce mélange d’urba nité et de geste artistique,d’explora tion spatiale et d’arpentage reflète tout l’intérêt que Volten porte aux potentialités de l’art dans l’espace public. André Volten est également présent dans la collection d’art de l’OEB par une sculpture monumen tale qui fait partie de l’aménage ment extérieur du siège de l’insti tution à Munich,datant de quelques années plus tôt. Œuvre de com mande,ces sphères et calottes sphé riques constituaient la contribu tion des Pays-Bas à la fondation de l’OEB dans le cadre du premier concours d’art public lancé par l’ins titution. Despite beginning his career as a painter, André Volten (* 1925, Andijk, NL, † 2002, Amsterdam, NL) discov ered a fascination for heavy mate rial and its use in art while work ing as a shipyard welder, prompting him to become a sculptor. His steel sculpture, 12 m tall and 24 m long, is a striking landmark at the visi tors’ entrance to the EPO’s offices in The Hague.Though it looks like an obelisk from a distance, at close range, this monumental work suggests a colossal compass that might be used to measure the world. In combining urbanity with the artistic gesture, space explora tion with the practice of land sur veying, Volten demonstrates his great interest in the potential of art in public space.The EPO collection includes another slightly earlier piece by André Volten in the form of a large-scale installation on the grounds of the Munich headquar ters. Entitled Kugeln und Kugelka lotten [Spheres and Hemispheres], this work was acquired as part of the EPO’s first public art competi tion to represent the Dutch contri bution to the founding of the Euro pean Patent Office.
