L’une est non-figurative, l’autre présente une figure stylisée, à la manière d’un pictogramme. La précision avec laquelle les transpa rents de couleur sont juxtaposés produit un effet hard edge (nette té des contours) qui fait penser à un produit industriel, parfaite ment lisse. Gerwald Rockenschaub (* 1952 Linz, AT) puise certes dans des langages formels préexistants, qu’il combine entre eux. Ce qui, en revanche, est totalement absent, c’est la touche personnelle. Le geste artistique semble tenu à distance, oblitéré. La pérennité des langages formels et le jeu d’influences réciproques des différents modes d’expression sont des préoccupa tions récurrentes dans l’œuvre de Rockenschaub. Peintre, plasticien, disc jockey, il a lui-même été amené à puiser dans le répertoire des formes acoustiques et visuelles tant de la culture populaire que de la culture élitaire. Les deux œuvres de la collection de l’OEB en sont le témoignage, avec leur impact direct, faisant l’effet d’un signal, dénué d’ambiguïté. Beide Bilder sind plakativ, klar in ihrer Farb- und Formensprache. Das eine Motiv ist ungegenständ lich, das andere zeigt eine pikto grammartig stilisierte Figur. Der Charakter dieser Werke ist indust riell und glatt, da das exakte Auf einandertreffen von Farbfolien zu einem Eindruck der ‚harten Kante‘ führt. Gerwald Rockenschaub (* 1952 Linz, AT) greift dabei durch aus auf bestehende künstlerische Formensprachen zurück, die asso ziiert werden können. Es fehlt da bei jedoch gänzlich eine individuel le Handschrift, vielmehr wirkt die künstlerische Geste distanziert zu rückgenommen. Rockenschaub beschäftigt sich immer wieder mit der Haltbarkeit von Formenspra chen und der gegenseitigen Beein flussung unterschiedlicher Aus drucksmöglichkeiten. Er selbst hat als Maler, Bildhauer und Discjockey mit dem akustischen und visuel len Formenrepertoire der Hoch- und Populärkultur gearbeitet. Davon zeugen auch die beiden im Besitz des EPA befindlichen Werke, die direkt, signalhaft und unmissver ständlich wirken. Gerwald Rockenschaub (* 1952 Linz, AT) harks back in these works to existing associative artistic vocab ularies. Entirely devoid of any sign of individuality, the artistic gesture seems aloof, withdrawn. Rockenschaub frequently engages with the durability of idioms and the mutual influence of different forms of expression. As painter, sculptor and DJ, he, himself, has worked with the acoustic and visu al repertoire of forms from both high and popular culture. This is demonstrated by the EPO collec tion’s two pieces,which are straight forward, unambiguous and signal- like in appearance.
