Korea: Considerable rise in IP filings during the first quarter 2014

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) published an overview on IP trends for the first three months in 2014. Compared to the same period in 2013, both applications and registrations for IP rights increased.  

Some of the most important trends compared to the first quarter in the previous year include:

  • applications for all IP rights (patents, utility models, designs, trademarks) increased by 6.2%
  • applications for patents grew by 8.5% while utility model applications rose by 10.8%
  • this trend is based in almost entirely on domestic filings: applications submitted by Koreans increased by 11.0% for patents and 12.8% for utility models
  • on the other hand, filings by foreigners grew only by 0.8% for patents and even decreased by 21.3% for utility models
  • grants of patents rose by 5.3% while utility model registrations decreased by 18.9%
  • patent-related trial requests decreased considerably by 20.0%
