Korea: KIPO to ease formal requirements to obtain a filing day

As another patent law amendment to make it easier for applicants to obtain an early filing day, the Korean Patent Office (KIPO) will relax the formal requirements for submitting a patent or utility model application.

From 1 January 2015 onwards, applicants can apply for a patent simply by submitting materials that explain the content of the invention such as papers or research notes without having to worry about the correct form of a standard patent application. However, the applicant will be still required to submit the application in the proper format within either 14 months from earliest priority day or three months from filing a request for examination, whichever period ends earlier.

For further information, please refer to KIPO's overview on legal texts (at the time of posting, only available in Korean).
