The State Intellectual Property Office of the P.R. China (SIPO) and the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Office (HKIPD) signed a co-operation agreement in the area of patents in December 2013. The agreement is part of Hong Kong's efforts to establish an original grant patent system in addition to the current re-registration system. According to the corresponding press release on the HKIPD website, the revision to Hong Kong's patent system is scheduled to enter into force by 2016/2017. Under the co-operation agreement, SIPO will provide technical assistance and staff training with respect to the substantive examination of patent applications.
