The Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) have agreed to start a pilot Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) programme. The Philippines are the JPO's second PPH partner from an ASEAN member state (after Singapore).
From 12 March 2012, the PPH will apply to patent applications which are assumed patentable by the JPO or the IPOPHIL, as well as PCT applications having received a positive written opinion from the JPO, serving as an international searching authority and international preliminary examining authority. Under this programme, Japanese applicants will be able to obtain a patent right in the Philippines (where no early examination system is available) speedily, in accordance with examination results from the JPO.
