Following the clearance of the Copyright (Amendment) Bill 2012 by the Indian Parliament in late May 2012, the amendments will enter into force after assent by the President and announcement in the Gazette of India.
The aim of the amendments is to bring India's Copyright Act 1957, effective since January 1958 and followed by several amendments in the 1980s and 1990s, further into line with international standards. Major areas concern, among others, the rights of authors and composers, the rights of the visually impaired as well as punitive actions.
The text of the bill as passed by the Upper House of the Indian Parliament on 17 May 2012 is available for download under "Business" - "Legislation" on the Rajya Sabha's (Upper House) website. The Copyright Act 1957, Copyright Rules 1958 and subsequent amendments can be found on the Indian Copyright Office's website.
