Korea: KIPO published filing and registration trends for the second quarter 2012

Compared to the same period in 2011, both applications and registrations for IP rights increased.  

Some of the most important trends compared to the first quarter in the previous year include:

• applications for all IP rights (patents, utility models, designs, trademarks) increased by 8.2%
• applications for patents also increased by 8.2% while utility model applications further decreased by 6.2%
• by nationality, patent applications from foreigners rose by 11.1%%, filings from Koreans grew by 7.3%
• grants of all IP rights increased by 29.5%
• grants of patents rose considerably by 50.3% while utility model registrations increased  by 19.6%
• top applicants by country were Japan (5.262 applications), the USA (4554) and Germany (1158).
