Korea: Filing and registration trends for the third quarter 2012

The third quarter of the year 2012 saw a considerable growth in IP filings and applications for international searches. Some of the most important trends compared to the same period in 2011 include:

• applications for all IP rights (patents, utility models, designs, trademarks) increased by 7.2% while registrations of all IP rights grew by 4.1%
• applications by foreigners for all IP rights increased by 4.8% while domestic filings rose  by 7.6%.
• filings of small and medium sized companies as well as middle sized enterprises for all IP rights showed a particularly high increase of 14.0% and 31.4% respectively while applications of large companies slightly decreased by 0.1%.
• applications for patents increased by 8.3%, trade marks by 4.1% and designs by 10.2%.
• applications for international searches at KIPO under the PCT system grew by 7.4%
