On 28 May 2013, Singapore's newly-formed patent examination office was officially inaugurated. The patent examination office, along with several international agreements, is aimed at accelerating the patent application procedure. Under the accelerated process, an applicant with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) will be able to determine to which extent an invention is patentable within 12 months.
The patent examination office comprises mostly examiners with PhD degrees, with specialisation in biotechnology, pharmaceutics, chemistry, nano-materials, semiconductors and communications technology. By next year, the office will expand to a total of 50 patent examiners. More information can be found in a press release on IPOS' website.
