The super accelerated patent examination system celebrated its second anniversary on 1 October. While regular patent examinations take on average 17 months, the super accelerated system cuts this period short to just one month on average. In order to use this system, the patent must be acknowledged as "green technology" by eight acts related to environment and energy such as the "Basic Act on Low Carbon Green Growth".
According to statistics published by KIPO, a total of 278 patent applications were examined through this system from October 2009 till July 2011. Among them 83 % were used for the commercialisation of the patent right - a much higher rate than the 43 % for regular patent applications.
