Korea: Filing and registration trends for the third quarter 2011

The third quarter of the year 2011 saw a two-digit increase in IP filings and a considerable growth in registrations. There was a disproportionally high increase in applications for trade marks

Some of the most important trends compared to the same period in 2010 include:

• applications for all IP rights (patents, utility models, designs, trademarks) increased by 10.1%.
• applications by foreigners for all IP rights increased by 10.2% while domestic filings rose by 10.0%
• applications for patents increased by 8.5% while utility model applications continued to decrease (minus 9.8%)
• there was a particular high increase in trade mark applications by 21.4%
• grants of all IP rights grew by 32.8%
• grants for patents increased by 34.9%,  while registrations of utility models increased even more by 42.4%.
