Patent Translate

The EPO and Google have worked together to bring you a translation service optimised for patent documents.

Patent Translate is now complete and covers translations between English and 31 other languages, namely Albanian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish. Translation from and into French and German is also available for 27 of these languages.

Getting started

Using Patent Translate in Espacenet

  1. Find a patent document in Espacenet.
  2. Choose the part you want to translate - abstract, description or claims.
  3. Select the target language, and click the Patent Translate button.
  4. Once you see the translation, you can mouse-over to see the original text sentence by sentence.
  5. Submit your feedback.

Using Patent Translate in the publication server

  1. Enter for example a value in the field "Publication number", and click the "Search" button.
  2. Select in the result list the document you want to display by clicking the "XML" link.
  3. Select the target language, and click the Patent Translate button.
  4. The original text is visible when hovering over paragraphs or when clicking the "Original" link.
