EPO adds Japanese legal status data to its databases

Good news to start the new year - the EPO has just filled what for years was seen by many as a major gap in its legal status data collection. On 26 January 2012, legal status information from Japan became available in Espacenet, Open Patent Services and as part of the "Worldwide legal status" raw data product. This major achievement is the result of many years of intensive co-operation between the Japan Patent Office and the EPO.

The table lists the key details on the new data.

Japanese legal status in EPO databases

Time period covered

from April 2011

Updates are weekly, and there is a time delay of approx. 6-8 weeks between the appearance of the event in the Japanese databases and the appearance of the corresponding data in the EPO's database

Data available

A-codes

Procedural information from application through to grant/refusal

 

R-codes

Register information such as change of owner, fee payments, etc

Not yet available

T-codes

Trial information, i.e. information on appeals, oppositions and invalidations (Note: opposition was abolished in Japan in 2004)
