The European Inventor Award - presented by the European Patent Office and the European Commission in co-operation with the EU Council Presidency - is a tribute to those whose inventions have achieved an outstanding and enduring success in Europe.

European Inventor Award 2010 in the category "Lifetime achievement"
German nuclear physicist Wolfgang Krätschmer broke new ground with a procedure that allowed for the production of research quantities of "fullerenes", a new group of carbons. The tiny nano particles can now be fully investigated and are used in a wide range of industries.
Award ceremony
The European Inventor Awards 2011 will be presented in May in Budapest.

Since 2006, the EPO and European Commission have come together each year to honour inventors who had made a significant contribution to innovation in Europe. In 2011, Awards will be presented in five categories.
