"Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand.
The sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus."
- Alexander Graham Bell
The spirit of invention, the quest for creating things that are new and groundbreaking, has propelled human progress for generations. When gifted inventors think outside the box in search of new solutions and technologies, all of mankind takes a collective step forward.
Whether in medicine, transport, or communications, without a number of key inventions, we would not be able to enjoy the standard of living we often take for granted.
Real inventors are far removed from the cliché of the reclusive eccentric tucked away in his workshop or laboratory. They contribute directly to daily life and pave the way for advancements in directions that were previously unthinkable.
And thanks to the patent system, with its emphasis on detailed documentation and registration of new technologies, society has been able to benefit from new achievements.
At the same time, patents have also protected the rights of inventors before the law. After all, invention does require hard work. As Thomas Edison put it: "Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration."
To honour the inventive spirit - and the hard work required for true success - we present you with a number of outstanding European inventors and their extraordinary contributions.
