In parallel, new information was added to the "Scenarios for the future" section of this website today and a discussion forum is being developed that will go online in the coming weeks as part of the EPO's contribution to World Intellectual Property Day.
Launched in 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), World Intellectual Property Day aims to raise awareness about patents, copyright, designs and trade marks.
In the course of the three-year "Scenarios" project, the EPO interviewed around 150 key players - including critics of the system - from the fields of science, business, politics, ethics, economics and law, seeking their opinions on how patenting and IP could evolve in the coming decades.
Four scenarios - relevant and plausible stories about the future - were developed from their answers. These scenarios, which were created with the help of more than 40 EPO staff members, are intended as tools to generate policy debates and were presented to the public for the first time at the European Patent Forum in Munich on 18 April. A summary of the discussions is available on this website.
EPO President Alain Pompidou handed over the compendium, detailing the results of the project, to President-elect Alison Brimelow during the Forum's closing, telling her that she will be "in charge" of reacting to these issues. Ms Brimelow, who is due to take over from Professor Pompidou on 1 July, assured him that the report - and the future - is in "safe hands".
