Member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) last week decided to adopt a "Development Agenda" to enhance the development dimensions of the organization's work.
Director General Dr Kamil Idris welcomed the decision, saying: "This is a historic day for the organization and its member states. The adoption of the Development Agenda is testimony to the international community's commitment to promote the evolution of an IP system that addresses the needs and concerns of all countries."
The agenda, which was adopted on 28 September, consists of 45 concrete recommendations in the following areas:
"This milestone decision is an important and positive step towards ensuring and rewarding innovation and creativity in a balanced and effective manner," Dr Idris said, urging WIPO members to maintain the same momentum and political commitment in ensuring the implementation of the proposals.
WIPO's member states, which include all EPO members, agreed to establish a Committe on Development and Intellectual Property to facilitate the implementation of the recommendations. The committee will monitor, assess, discuss and report on the implementation of recommendations and coordinate with relevant WIPO bodies.
The committee, which will be made up of member states and open to accredited intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations, is expected to meet for the first time in the first half of 2008.
The meeting of WIPO assemblies, which brought together representatives from the organization's 184 member states, ended yesterday (3 October) in Geneva.
