The Handbook
of European Intellectual Property Management (Second Edition) has just been published by Kogan Page in
association with the European Patent Office. It follows from the success of the first edition (published in July
2007), and was developed by the same two consultant editors: business writer
Adam Jolly and the EPO's Jeremy Philpott.
This comprehensive Handbook contains over sixty entirely new chapters explaining the practical aspects of applying IP to business growth and success. Each chapter was written by a different expert in such fields as negotiating, owning, licensing, commercialising, financing or enforcing IP. The authors range from experienced technology transfer practitioners, lawyers and attorneys, to key industry players or knowledgeable patent office personnel. Each one offers their own insight on a particular topic to enable a reader to make informed decisions on their patent, trademark and copyright strategies.
The book is certainly aimed at business leaders, managers and decision-makers who might not necessarily be IP or legal professionals themselves but who nevertheless need guidance and options.
Author Gwilym Roberts, a patent attorney with firm Kilburn & Strode LLP, said "This book goes beyond a dry treatment of IP issues and provides a wide ranging and detailed practical treatment, ideal for the practitioner involved in the business of patents and innovation."
Two chapters were written by EPO experts: Nigel Clarke wrote about searching patent information, and Colin Stratford clarified the often misunderstood and misreported practice of the EPO with regard to computer-implemented inventions.
Jeremy Philpott leads the Innovation Support activities of the European Patent Academy, where he organises training programmes for business audiences across Europe on topics such as patent strategies and innovation management.
