Qualification proposed for patent searchers

23 November 2009

The Confederacy of European Patent Information User Groups (CEPIUG) and the Patent Documentation Group (PDG) have reached agreement on the main features of a professional qualification for patent information specialists.

The main goal of the two organisations will be to put a certification process in place that will create the title "Certified Patent Information Analyst" (CPIA).

A person who holds the title CPIA will be "a specialist in the retrieval and the analysis of scientific, technical, business, and legal information that is relevant for establishing the knowledge and legal status in the field of patents, according to main legislation worldwide."

A working group is currently putting together a catalogue of the knowledge and skills required to become a certified patent information analyst, and to devise a set of examinations to test these. Working together with the Patent Information User Group (PIUG) in the US, they have gathered the names of some 30 volunteers who will draft examination papers for mock examinations to be organised during 2010.

The mock examinations will be the first concrete test of the CPIA concept and a significant step towards the creation of a true professional qualification in the field of patent information.

The CEPIUG participated in the EPO Patent Information Conference recently and sits on the Standing Advisory Committee's Sub-Committee on Patent Documentation and Information (SACEPO/PDI).
