This distance learning course has been designed for patent examiners at national offices and is based on a series of six virtual classroom (VC) sessions on the use of EPOQUE Net. The course is aimed at hands-on practical exercises with supporting videos and e-learning modules.

The material will help to broaden skills of EPOQUE Net users at national offices. Tips and tricks on efficient use of the EPO's professional patent search tool will be brought to participants by experienced EPO examiners.

During the VC sessions, the participants have the possibility to communicate live with the experts and ask questions (see "VC guidelines for participants"). The sessions will be recorded and released in the course. Further interaction among participants and with the tutors is possible via an online forum.

On completion of the course participants will
– have a good understanding of EPOQUE Net.
– be able to efficiently perform basic searches using EPOQUE Net.


Participants should have
–    entry-level knowledge of patent searching with EPOQUE Net
–    regular access to EPOQUE Net
–    very good command of English, both orally and in writing.

Technical requirements:
In order to attend the on-line course participants need a computer with an internet browser and a high-speed broadband internet connection. For the virtual classrooms, the EPO uses Cisco WebEX, so initially some WebEX software will be installed on your computer. Security settings on local Firewalls need to be checked. For more information please see the "VC guidelines for participants" under "Downloads". In order to make full use of the VC sessions, we recommend to use headsets.

Duration: 3 months

Estimated working time:
Every VC session takes approximately 1 - 1,5 h
Preparing exercises takes approximately 3 h per exercise
