The integration of Italy and Latvia marks a decade of enhanced transparency and accessibility in patent information across Europe.

Latvia joined the Federated Register service at the end of March 2025, followed by Italy in June. These new integrations provide users with streamlined access to reliable and up-to-date bibliographic and legal status information for European patents validated in Italy and Latvia (Fig. 1).

With the addition of new contributing countries, the Federated Register now covers a total of 36 states: 34 EPO member states, one extension state and one validation state. This accounts for 78% of the EPO’s 46 states. When considering only the 39 EPO member states, the coverage rises to 87%, underscoring the growing reach of the service.

As a component of the European Patent Register, the Federated Register is the third most visited panel, following “EP About this file” and “EP All documents.” It offers users quick, consolidated access to essential bibliographic and legal status information for the national phase of granted European patents. Once a patent enters the national phase in a participating country, its legal status is displayed in a single, user-friendly table. This enhances transparency and helps reduce the risk of legal disputes.

Launched in November 2015, the Federated Register service celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Its ultimate goal remains unchanged: to provide comprehensive access to the legal status of granted European patents across all designated, extension and validation states.

Comprehensive information on the Federated Register, including participating countries and specific data provided by each national patent office, is linked below and available on the EPO website and in the Register Help Files.
