Remember the overhead projectors in your school or office? They used a bright light to project a relatively small text or image onto a much larger surface for everyone in the room to see instantly. The text or image simply had to be printed, hand-written or drawn on a transparent plastic film (a “transparency”). In this series, the Danish artist duo AVPD present blank transparencies with a view to creating an illusion of space amid shifting light, depending on the position that the viewer takes.

The triptych consists of translucent coloured film that has been carefully layered to create vivid forms and tones which change according to the angle and intensity of light. This encourages the viewer to alter their physical position and move around the space, with the artwork transforming in response to the viewer’s actions. Driven by a focus on constantly changing perceptions, perspectives and experiences of time and space, as well as a performative approach, AVPD find sources of inspiration in science fiction films, literature, computer games and virtual architecture.

AVPD is the artist duo Aslak Vibæk and Peter Døssing, who have been working together since 1997. They live and work in Copenhagen, where they studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Their major exhibitions include shows at Samzie Space (Seoul); Union Gallery (London); Basement (VEGA) (Copenhagen); Danish Design Center (Copenhagen); Europaliafestival (Brussels); MUSAC (Castilla y León); Factory 2.0 (Seoul); Kunsten – Museum of Modern Art (Aalborg); SMK Copenhagen; Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon); Fundação E-Carta (Porto Alegre); and FACT (Liverpool).
